Occasionally, the RS stands up as the truly stellar women they are.

A neighbor was just diagnosed with Lou Gehrig disease, a horrible horrible thing. The RS has stepped in to help her, and her family, cope with meals, cleaning the house, even answering the phone. She is a strong woman, but no one beats that disease, so we all know it's just a matter of time... and no one knows how short or how long that time will be.

This is one of the real strengths of the church: the Relief Society's ability and willingness to do what is necessary to relieve suffering.

God bless them, every one. They'll never lead, have access to billions in tithing, or make a decision to build a mall costing billions, but they have access to and are the beating heart of the church.

A good thing too. If they had that responsibility as well, their quality work in RS would suffer. It's kinda like husband and wife which is what the Church is all about. No one should do it alone.

I wonder when we can expect the quorums to sign up for house cleaning duty?

I do that all the time. I end up loading and unloading the dishwasher. I seem to be the only one to remember to vacuum the carpets and take out the trash. I'm the one who sorts the clothes and brings them up from the laundry room. I clean the toilets (while barfing). Can't get my daughters to mow the lawn or shovel snow, they're too dainty. All so my wife can fix me a sammich and bring me a cold lemonade during the game.

Harmony, the Relief Society women are doing God's work. Be thankful that is not interfered with by running a business empire instead.

when a family is in need i have always seen the priesthood and RS respond as needed - i have witnessed only the RS pick up the yoke, and others times just the priesthood, and many times both together.
I imagine i will see the priesthood sign up for "house cleaning duty" at the same time the RS signs up to load furniture into a moving van or re-roof a house.....as EQP, i have yet to witness RS "sign up" for moving families in/out of the ward, but that in no way diminishes the reality of the great work the RS/EQ does.

I think that both Visiting Teaching and Home Teaching are two of the programs that really add value to the Church as a whole.

One of the ladies who I visit teach had hip surgery a few years ago. She couldn't be alone at all for about three weeks. After her daughter had to go back to her home state, we put together a schedule, and our ward Relief Society worked it out so that someone could be there to help her when she needed to get up and go to the bathroom, be there for her physical therapy, help with housework and meals, etc.

It was a little unnerving that her husband just sort of expected the help, but having taken care of my father when he was ill after a stroke for four months, I also understand the exhaustion and frustration that comes from 24 hour care of loved one.

I agree that they should add value but find that in practice they don't.

Where it works well is when the wards ladies pull round in support of sisters and families in need, such as when babies are due, there's a death in the family etc. In the behavioural sense this is like a family or village pulling together in a time of crisis. Meals are provided, kids are ferried around, jobs are done around the home etc.

This is generally driven by a good Relief Society Presidency with good caring ward members.

Home Teaching is a dismal failure by comparison. It is driven as a teaching programme and an activation programme which leaves the welfare elements to the wimminfolk.

I don't go home teaching.
Instead I invest the equivalent time in helping out my family, extended family, friends and neighbours. Much more uplifting, much more engaging, much more beneficial.

RS helps move families here. It's certainly not the men who pack the boxes and then unpack them and put the stuff away in the new place.

Good grief. AS EQP, I'd expect you to send around a sign up sheet, showing which days your quorum members would be taking food over, cleaning the house (bathroom included), and babysitting. Oh, that's right... y'all just move stuff.

I really feel for the family and for your RS. A number of years ago the father of a family in our ward had this disease. He slowly failed over about a five year period. It was so sad but the ward RS and priesthood really rallied around the family and helped them out so very much. This is one of the real positives about the Church.
